Summer Literacy Program

We are excited to once again be able to offer our Summer Literacy Program through The Duke Endowment to rising 1st and 2nd grade students. This year our program will run four weeks: July 5–30; 7:30am to 3:00pm each weekday.

If you know of a student who is reading below grade level and would benefit from this program, please contact Rachel Minick, sitedirector@wilkes.net, recently hired as the SLP Site Director.

We welcome Rachel Minick to the staff of Wilkesboro UMC as our Summer Literacy Site Director. Rachel is a School Counselor at North Wilkesboro Elementary School.  She graduated from Appalachian State University with a MA in Professional School Counseling in 2011.  Rachel loves reading and using books as a therapy tool at work. She is currently reading The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green.

Our summer program relies heavily on your participation. The following volunteer opportunities are:

- Food service/meals - Classroom aides or reading buddies - Chaperones - Enrichment Activities Leader

If you have a gift/talent/passion to share with the kids,  you can sign up to host a class. In the past students have learned from our church family about missions by creating sleeping mats for the homeless, weaving, science, crafts, and many others. If you wish to serve in this way, please contact Rachel Minick sitedirector@wilkes.net.

We will also be hiring a few people to work the noon to 3pm Enrichment shift.  This would be a great summer job for college students! Again – please contact Rachel for information.
